Global Service Learning Team Provides Free Dental Care in Peru
From May 23-June 2, nine pre-doctoral students (Gynnekia Booth, Kristin Bradley, Simran Kaur, Yeonkyung (Jenna) Lee, Allan J. McQuarrie III, Hemali Patel, Rayna Silva, Alicia Kim, and Tyler Brown), faculty advisor, Dr. Leopoldo Correa, and Drs. Boris Bacanurschi, Gregory Kosmidis, Athena Papas, Katie Talmo, and James Theodore provided care to more than 100 residents of the 600-person rural community of Granja Porcón, Cajamarca, in the Peruvian Andes, working in collaboration with the Health Sciences Program at Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC) in Lima. With a team effort, the students raised over $15,000 to cover the trip expenses. During the week, faculty supervised preventive, restorative, and surgical procedures performed by the students, who were also able to experience the welcoming community of Granja Porcón, where access to dental care is limited due to its remote location.
