Many aspects of Tufts’ curricula are global by design. Academic majors and degree programs across the campuses offer opportunities for Tufts students to pursue a field of study that touches on global issues across a wide range of disciplines.  

Anthropology

Anthropologists study global human experience, combining social, cultural, biological, archaeological, and linguistic approaches within a single discipline.

Biology

Faculty and students in the Department of Biology at Tufts study global change biology and tropical biology and conservation. 

Economics

Teaching students to be critical thinkers and to use the discipline of economics to analyze and solve problems associated with important economic, political and social issues.

History of Art and Architecture

History of Art and Architecture offers courses on cultures from across the globe, including Impressionism, Latin American and US Latinx, Islamic, African, Buddhist, American, Medieval, Renaissance, Armenian, Contemporary, and Byzantine art, as well as courses on the history of architecture, film, and photography. 

International Literary and Cultural Studies

Dedicated to the teaching and research of a range of languages, literatures, and cinemas from across the world.

International Literary and Visual Studies

The program in International Literary and Visual Studies makes possible the study of literature, film, and visual arts in an international context.

International Relations

The multi-faceted IR major ensures students are exposed to the kind of mind-broadening knowledge of paramount importance in today's world.

Judaic Studies

The program in Judaic Studies gives students the opportunity to explore the experience and diverse cultural heritage of the Jewish people from various perspectives. The program comprises the courses listed under Hebrew and Judaic Studies, as well as a number of courses in other departments.

Latin American Studies

Latin American Studies integrates the varying disciplinary perspectives of the arts, literature, social sciences, and history, along with the study of languages of the area, into a coherent view of Latin America.

Middle Eastern Studies

An interdisciplinary program  that encourages breadth in coursework and significant immersion in one or more Middle Eastern cultures.

Peace and Justice Studies

PJS provides students with an academic means to understand global crises and to explore the means for achieving a just peace and sustainability.

Political Science

The Department of Political Science is committed to enhancing the understanding of our domestic and international political landscape through the four subfields of American Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Political Theory and Philosophy.

Religion

The Department of Religion at Tufts is dedicated to the exploration and critical analysis of religion as a central aspect of human history and culture. 

Romance Studies

The Department of Romance Studies is committed to educating students in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish languages and culture, and in Latin American Studies. 

Studies in Race, Colonialism, and Diaspora 

The academic home for Africana, American, Asian American, Colonialism and Latino Studies.

Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning

The complex problems faced by modern day planners and policymakers cross city, state, and national boundaries and require creative thinkers with the tools to address these problems head on.

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering 

Tufts Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering conducts research in four main areas: Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, Environmental Health, Geosystems Engineering, and Structural Engineering and Mechanics.

Department of Mechanical Engineering 

In the Mechanical Engineering Department, we help develop student knowledge and skills in robotics and controls, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, manufacturing and materials, design and human factors, and in engineering education.  All these areas have global implications and as a result, our faculty work with faculty around the world to find global solutions.  We have collaborations with industry and universities in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Asia and South America.

The MGA provides a focused, yet interdisciplinary education in international relations. This degree is ideal for students who are interested in taking a deep dive into a single field of study and immediately pursue a career path in that area.

By connecting theory and practice, MALD students transform themselves into well-versed and competent leaders who are able to shape international issues and events across a variety of sectors.

Master of International Business (MIB)

The MIB degree is uniquely positioned to develop your contextual intelligence by honing the ability to recognize the impact of politics, law, culture, and society on the world of business.

Master of Global Business Administration (GBA)

The online degree program combines in-depth, graduate-level study in both business and international affairs, delivered through recorded and live online sessions in addition to two immersion experiences. The GBA gives students the flexibility to earn a degree in international business at their own pace and from anywhere in the world.

Global Master of Arts Program

The GMAP program is a one-year program specifically designed for mid-career and senior-level international professionals and business executives who want to pursue their master's degree while continuing to work full-time.

Fletcher's Master of Arts degree is a one-year program for mid-career professionals on sabbatical or leave of absence from government ministries, private international organizations and other institutions.

Master of Laws in International Law

The LLM is focused exclusively on issues of public and private international law, across a range of nearly 30 courses taught by experts in international law with extensive real world experience.

Agriculture, Food and Environment

The Agriculture, Food and Environment (AFE) program fuses the disciplines of nutrition, agricultural science, environmental studies, and public policy.

Food and Nutrition Policy and Programs

Food and Nutrition Policy and Programs offers interdisciplinary training for students seeking careers to improve food policy and food security and nutrition outcomes in industrialized and developing countries.

Nutrition Epidemiology and Data Science

The Nutrition Epidemiology and Data Science program is designed to train students in the design, implementation, and analysis of epidemiologic studies that address questions of the role of dietary intake and nutritional status in disease prevention. 

Master of Arts in Humanitarian Assistance

MAHA is a rigorous academic program that prepares humanitarian practitioners to address today’s humanitarian challenges as leaders in the evolving landscape. 

Master of Nutrition Science and Policy

The MNSP degree program is designed for health professionals, career-changers, and recent graduates who are passionate about nutrition, and who seek a world-class program without having to disrupt their life or career. 

Courses under the IGL umbrella include:

  • Education for Public Inquiry and International Citizenship (EPIIC) Colloquium, a rigorous, carefully integrated multidisciplinary program on a global theme that is open to students of all majors and years; 
  • Inquiry,  one of the university’s largest and most diverse public service initiatives, engaging high school students from public and private schools in six states in an intellectual and challenging yearlong program mentored by Tufts students.

Global Health Programs

Tufts School of Medicine views global health education as an important component of its educational mission. Tufts graduates and faculty are engaged in collaborations in research, education, and training with colleagues in a number of countries around the world and serve as advisors and mentors for students planning global health experiences.
