Diana Chigas, Senior International Officer and Associate Provost

As Senior International Officer and Associate Provost, Diana Chigas provides leadership in the development and realization of a university-wide global strategy to enhance Tufts’ position in global education, research, and impact. Reporting to the University Provost, Diana is responsible for providing information, facilitation and support for globally-focused student engagement and faculty teaching, research and policy activities.  She works with Tufts’ schools to identify university-wide geographic and thematic priorities, partnerships and global initiatives. Diana also works closely with the Director of Global Operations to ensure that appropriate administrative infrastructure and services are in place to support Tufts’ global initiatives.

Former positions
From 2003 – 2016, Diana co-directed the Reflecting on Peace Practice Program and subsequently was co-director of Collaborative Learning at CDA Collaborative Learning Projects (Cambridge, MA), an NGO dedicated to working with development, humanitarian and peacebuilding practitioners and policy makers globally to improve the effectiveness of peacebuilding strategies, programming, and monitoring and evaluation.  Prior to joining CDA (1989-2002), Diana worked as a facilitator, trainer and consultant in negotiation, dialogue and conflict resolution, at Conflict Management Group, an NGO founded by the late Harvard Law School Professor Roger Fisher (and now part of Mercy Corps). Her work included development of strategies, training and advice on preventive diplomacy in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, “track two” discussions in El Salvador, South Africa, Georgia/South Ossetia, and facilitation of inter-ethnic dialogue in Cyprus. Diana has been teaching negotiation and development and conflict resolution at Fletcher since 2000.

Research interests
Negotiation and mediation in identity-based conflicts, evaluation of peacebuilding effectiveness, corruption and effective anti-corruption strategies in fragile and conflict-affected states; roles and impacts of development, humanitarian assistance and business on conflict and peace dynamics.

Its charge is to provide guidance and support on university-wide priorities and initiatives for expanding and deepening Tufts’ global engagement, as well as enhancing coherence in the university’s global presence.
