Visitor and meeting policy

Our goal is to reduce the overall number of people on campus to minimize the risk of transmission of the virus and protect faculty, staff and students from unnecessary exposure to COVID-19.  We continue to urge strongly that all meetings and events, be conducted virtually if possible, even if planned as off-campus events.

    As a reminder, Tufts policy related to personal safety on campus requires:

    • Wearing a face mask or face covering when in the presence of others and in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., meeting rooms, classrooms, etc.)
    • Maintaining social distance from others—at least 6 feet from other people even while wearing face covering – and not gathering in groups.
    • Following visual cues and signage placed by the university to indicate where people may stand, sit or walk.
    • Washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with 60 percent to 95 percent alcohol.
    • Covering coughs and sneezes.
    • Following limitations on use of restrooms and elevators set by departments and units to ensure that at least six feet of distance can be maintained between individuals; depending on the size of the elevator, the number is persons who can use it at any one time will range from 1 to a maximum of 4.
    Who may come on campus?

    Visitors/guests will be permitted to come on to Tufts’ campuses only for essential business purposes that are in direct support of Tufts’ mission and operations and that cannot be conducted virtually. 

    Essential visitors include:

    • Approved vendors (suppliers, contractors, service people, etc.).
    • Participants in human subjects research studies with approved Face-to-Face Human Subjects Research Ramp-up Requests approved by the Integrative Safety Committee.
    • Patients in Tufts dental and veterinary clinics.
    • Parents and others helping students move in.  Parents should consult the Fall 2020 Campus Guide for AS&E Students, as well as the Tufts Student Life website and other communications from the Schools of Arts & Sciences and Engineering for policies, procedures, and restrictions, during the student arrival period.  These are changing as the COVID-19 situation and Massachusetts quarantine regulations evolve.
    • Dog-walkers and other members of the community who use the campuses for socially-distanced walks.
    • Approved organizations or community visitors to The Administration Building (TAB). 
    • Students and parents at the Eliot-Pearson Children’s School.

    All visitors must follow Tufts campus policies, including those outlined in the Return to Campus guide (for both students and employees), Tufts’ travel policies and any guidance issued by the relevant school or unit.  See below for further details.

    Who may NOT come on campus?

    Visitors who are not coming on campus for essential business are not permitted, exceptional circumstances.  These include, without limitation:

    • Speakers from off campus for events (conference, class, etc.).  Events with speakers should be cancelled, postponed or conducted remotely.
    • Guests from outside the university may not enter Tufts (Medford) residential halls, in accordance with the Fall 2020 Campus Guide for AS&E Students.  This exclusion includes Tufts students living off campus or in other on-campus residential buildings, Tufts alumni, and students from other universities.
    • Non-Tufts users of Tisch Sports and Fitness Center/ Cousens Gym or any of the facilities or services located therein.
    • Prospective applicants to Tufts.  While prospective applicants and their families may come onto the Medford/Somerville campus for walks and passive use, tours and meetings with admissions officers should be conducted by virtual means.
    • Applicants for employment at Tufts.  Job interviews for open positions should be conducted remotely—via Zoom, WebEx, telephone or other teleconferencing tools.  The same approach should be taken with all applicants to the same job, in order that no one is unfairly disadvantaged in the interview process.

    In exceptional circumstances, non-essential visitors may come to campus, provided advance approval of the visit by the Dean/EAD or VP (or their designee(s)) of the school or unit hosting the visitor(s) has been obtained.

    What guidance and restrictions must visitors who come to campus follow?

    If it is necessary to invite visitors or hold a meeting on any of Tufts’ campuses, campus policies, including those outlined in the Return to Campus guide (for both students and employees), Tufts’ travel policies, Tufts’ vendor policies,[1] and any guidance issued by the relevant school or unit must be followed.[2]  For students moving in to Tufts (Medford) (and guests helping them), specific requirements have been outlined in the website of the Office of Residential Life.  All visitors must fill out the Daily Health Survey prior to coming on campus.

    Individuals, programs, and groups hosting the visitor(s) are responsible for informing their guests about Tufts’ coronavirus policies and taking steps to ensure the policies are followed. In addition,


    Individuals, programs, or groups hosting a visitor(s) should know and understand restrictions and other considerations impacting the visitor based on the COVID-19 status of the area(s) they are traveling from.  In particular, they should be aware of Massachusetts and CDC guidelines that govern what is required of travelers coming to Massachusetts from out of state or another country.  As of August 1, Massachusetts’ COVID-19 Travel Order requires that all visitors to Massachusetts (including returning residents) who do not meet one of the exemptions, are required to fill out the Massachusetts travel form and self-

    • quarantine for 14 days if they do not produce a negative COVID-19 test administered within 72 hours prior to arrival.
    • Participants in approved human subjects research, and visitors to Tufts campus in connection with research, must also follow any COVID-19 Ramp Up policies and procedures required by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research.
    • If a visitor is confirmed COVID-19 positive within two weeks following the visit, they should inform Tufts (through, with subject heading “Confirmed Case”) if any Tufts faculty, staff, student, agent, consultant or other invitee(s) have been identified as a close contact.
